Trans-FUR Program

The Trans-Fur program of the Winchester Area SPCA was instituted in late 2017. The program is in line with the agency’s guiding principal to be a progressive animal intervention center.

The WASPCA has a phenomenal adoption base and would often ‘run out’ of adoptable dogs. At the same time, it was noted that other shelters across Virginia were very full of dogs and were being forced to euthanize due to space limitations.

WSPCA reached out to shelters across The Commonwealth who were at capacity in an effort to 1) keep the SPCA adoption center full to meet the demands of the adoption base in the area and 2) to save the lives of adoptable dogs throughout Virginia. In 2017, the SPCA pulled 12 dogs from at risk shelters.

To date, the Trans-Fur program has saved the lives of over 1,900 cats and dogs who would have been euthanized due to space.
