Discuss adopting a pet with all members of your family.

Think about the financial requirements of properly caring for an animal — this includes vet care, food & supplies.

If you are a tenant, obtain your landlord’s permission to bring an animal home.

Do some research — gather information about different companion animals to determine the best match for your family.

Make sure you understand the laws and requirements of pet ownership where you live.

Foster to Adopt

The Winchester Area SPCA has a Foster to Adopt program available for selected pets.

This program allows prospective adopters to take an animal home on a trial basis before officially adopting it. This trial period allows foster parents to assess if the animal is a good match. If the foster parent decides to adopt, they can do so, and the adoption process will be finalized. If not, the animal is returned to the shelter, and another potential adopter can be found.
