The Purple Leash Foster Program
The Purple Leash Program, a collaboration between the Winchester Area SPCA (WASPCA) and The Laurel Center (TLC), provides temporary, anonymous, foster care for the pets of domestic violence survivors, enabling them to leave abusive situations without abandoning their pets. Survivors retain ownership of their pets and maintain direct communication with foster families, fostering empowerment and connection.
Foster families, jointly recruited and trained by WASPCA and TLC, undergo domestic violence awareness and Fear-Free Certification to provide safe, supportive environments. WASPCA supplies resources and mediates concerns, while TLC offers survivor support and safety planning. The program prioritizes confidentiality, safety, and collaboration to protect and support survivors and their pets during critical transitions.
Maddie’s Fund recognized this program in the 2024 Open Arms Challenge for innovation and inclusivity.
